Education
Dr. Petty is a graduate of Southern College in Collegedale, Tennessee, received his PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia and his MD at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis. He completed residency training at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
Professional Experience
Dr. Petty was a NASA Pre-Doctoral and Research Fellow while at the Georgia Institute of Technology and gained expertise in brain research while at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences. He served as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry while at the University of Iowa and Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He has also been a staff physician for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Iowa City and Dallas. Currently, he is the Director of Research for Mental Health at the Nebraska-Western Iowa VA Health Care System and is Professor and Vice Chair for Research at Creighton University, both in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Petty also serves on a number of professional committees and is actively involved in medical student and psychiatry residency education.

Dr. Petty has received many professional honors, including a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, National Aeronautics and Space Administration Pre-doctoral Training Fellowship, National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship, Research Career Development Award, Department of Veterans Affairs, Research Associate and Clinical Investigator, VA Psychiatry Compassionate Care Award, Dept of Psychiatry, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Outstanding Contribution to Medical Student Education Award, Jewish War Veterans Dallas Chapter Certificate of Appreciation, "Best Doctors in Dallas" Award, D-Magazine, Jewish War Veterans of North Texas Special Commendation Award, and the Vietnam Veterans of America North Texas Chapter Certificate of Appreciation
Publications
Dr. Petty has authored over 150 articles, books, chapters and other scientific publications in neuroscience and pharmacology, with particular emphasis on depression and stress spectrum disorders.
